Human Performance Technology

What is Human Performance Technology (HPT)?

The International Society for Performance Improvement defines human performance technology as a set of methods and procedures and a strategy for solving problems for realizing opportunities related to the performance of people. It can be applied to individuals, small groups, and large organizations. It is in reality, a systematic combination of the three fundamental processes:

  • performance analysis
  • cause analysis and
  • intervention selection.
The goal of HPT is to ensure that your employees have the skills, knowledge, motivations and support mechanisms needed to effectively and efficiently perform their job. When properly designed and implemented, HPT solutions have a positive impact on the performer's outcome by promoting effectiveness in the workplace.

HPT is systematic.
HPT technologists in their approach identify and analyze performance gaps, document and analyze the system, the inputs and outputs, select appropriate interventions and implement these interventions in a manner which is measurable or observable.

HPT is systemic. It views your organization as a whole. The work, the employee and the workplace all come into play. HPT recognizes that there may be a variety of influencing factors and that all factors must be considered when selecting and implementing a solution.
